Dr. Jeffrey L. Hartzell has joined the medical staff at Jonesboro Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, 1416 East Matthews Ave., Suite 200.
Hartzell joins orthopaedic surgeons Brian Dickson, Spencer Guinn and Jeremy Swymn in the practice of orthopaedic and sports medicine at Jonesboro Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Trained in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, he specializes in sports medicine, thrower’s shoulder and elbow, including reconstruction, cartilage restoration and primary and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.
Hartzell is serving as a team physician for Arkansas State University athletics and St. Bernards Sports Medicine.
The holder of an M.D. degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, he completed a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, where he worked under the direction of Dr. James Andrews, a physician widely considered one of the foremost surgeons in the United States for knee, elbow and shoulder injuries.
During his fellowship, Hartzell served as the team physician for West Alabama University and Mountain Brook High School. He also assisted with sports medicine at the University of Alabama and participated in spring training activities with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hartzell also served on the physician team caring for the Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team, the AA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox as well as the team physician for the Fort Wayne TinCaps, a minor league affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Florida, Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in Gainesville.
Hartzell earned a bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. , and studied graduate level aeronautical engineering at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va., as well as graduate level biology at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis before entering medical school.
He has conducted research and has authored articles in peer-reviewed publications in the field of orthopaedics and sports medicine. He also has presented lectures on various aspects of orthopaedics and sports injuries
He holds membership in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
He and his wife, Megan, have four children, and they attend First United Methodist Church.
On the medical staff at St. Bernards Medical Center, he also is a member of HMG (Healthcare Medical Group) and SHARP (St. Bernards Healthcare Associated Regional Providers).
